Somebody Likes Me: Sons of Holdir
One of the main activities many level 80s find themselves doing is raising their reputation with the various factions in WoW. These each have NPC quartermasters that sell unique items, with a certain reputation level needed in order to purchase them. There are various ways to bring your reputation up depending on the faction. You can run that faction’s daily quests (these are repeating, each quest can be run once per day, and usually give a couple hundred rep), turn in tokens, or you can wear that faction’s tabard while running dungeons.
The first faction that I really focused on was the Sons of Holdir, a group of frost giants in the Storm Peaks. To be honest I didn’t have much of a reason for doing it; I just stumbled into them and started doing dailies. I was pretty dilligent about running these quests, usually doing all of the available ones every day. Once 3.0.8 came out and we were able to cash in Relics of Ulduar I started doing so as well. Even so, it took about 2 weeks to get to “Revered”, my current status.
So far the only rep reward I’ve gotten from them were the Reins of the Ice Mammoth, an epic mount. Once I get them up to Exalted I’ll be looking to pick up the Critical Strike/Attack Power shoulder enchantment, but really this probably was not the greatest faction for me to focus on.
I’ve moved on to the Knights of the Ebon Blade for now, earning rep points by wearing the tabard. Gaining exalted status with them allows purchase of the Death-Inured Sabatons, which seem to be pretty standard gear for DPS Death Knights.
I think it’s interesting that Blizzard has definitely done a lot of work on the post-level cap activities since I was last in the game. Before it seemed like there was nothing to do but grind instances for gear or farm gold. Now it’s easy to spend a fair bit of your time working on things like rep rewards or achievements in addition to these first two activities, making for a richer game play once you get to 80.
